GrowingRevolution’s PlantBox system has enabled the greening up of the Canary Wharf Estate as part of wider masterplan designed to enrich the public realm and contribute to the client’s ambitious sustainability goals.
Over 3,000 PlantBoxes were installed to create expansive living walls in prominent locations, helping to create a pleasant and relaxing environment for workers, residents, and visitors. The living walls will also help to improve air quality, attenuate rainwater, and increase Biodiversity.
PlantBox was ideal for this project because the modular system is free-standing, only requires restraint fixings and can be quickly assembled. It is manufactured in Norfolk using 100% UK recycled materials and is built to last for years to come. As the system is modular it can also be dismantled and re-installed in another location which offers future flexibility.
Easy installation
PlantBox could not be simpler to install, with each trough clicking and stacking together vertically, and clipping together horizontally to fit any space. Whilst the majority of the living walls at Canary Wharf are under 3 metres it can be installed up to 8 metres in height.
PlantBox is ground bearing and only requires restraint fixings, this meant that the living walls at Canary Wharf didn’t need structural approval which allowed for a first turnaround.
PlantBox can be used as a standalone system or incorporated into a Flourish unit which includes an aluminium surround and large water reservoir at the bottom of the unit. A series of flourish units were used in Reuters Plaza because there was minimal ground drainage in the area and the flourish units would keep water contained within the installation.
The troughs can either be planted up in advance or in- situ. The Growing Revolution team can advise on plant palettes to suit different conditions.

Easy Maintenance
Each living wall at Canary Wharf includes a simple irrigation system attached to a hozelock connector for easy watering.
PlantBox troughs include a 1.8L water reservoir and capillary felt which allows plants to draw up the water they need. The cascading overflow system allows the walls to be watered easily and avoids the risk of overwatering and water wastage.
