South Western Railway (SWR) recently embarked on an ambitious mission to enhance the public realm, combat air pollution, and promote biodiversity across their stations. They teamed up with our trade partner, Biotecture, to design and install a series of living walls using Growing Revolution’s PlantBlox system.
One of the main benefits of PlantBlox is that it can be deployed quickly and attached to a variety of different structures from walls to railings.
Biotecture installed living walls at several SWR stations, including Portsmouth Harbour, Weymouth, Hampton Court, Dorchester, Southampton Parkway.

PlantBlox is manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled materials. Sustainability is at the core of its design, aligning perfectly with the environmental goals of the SWR project. Furthermore, its modularity means that it can be dismantled and relocated in the future, reducing waste and maximizing its lifecycle.
PlantBlox is straightforward to assemble on-site. Biotecture’s installation team collaborated closely with station managers to ensure safe and efficient completion. Pre-planting the troughs at the West Sussex Nursery and then transporting them to the stations for installation streamlined the process.
Each living wall incorporates a simple irrigation system. This system can easily be connected to a tap for hassle-free watering. Additionally, every trough includes an integrated reservoir and cascading system, ensuring that water efficiently reaches every part of the wall.

PlantBlox has proven to be the ideal choice for South Western Railway’s living wall project. Its modular design, sustainability, ease of installation, and efficient irrigation system have all contributed to the success of this transformational initiative, creating more vibrant and environmentally friendly station environments.
